: Oriented Toward Community

Pastor Tom Grieb continues our "Making a Difference" series based on the visions and values of Saint John.

Acts 2:42 offers a wonderful glimpse into the day-to-day rhythms of the early New Testament church. Over three thousand had gathered for Pentecost. The Holy Spirit came in the rush of a mighty wind and tongues of fire rested on every worshipper. Those gathered spoke in languages different from their own. Peter preached the good news about Christ. It was a grand day that marks the birth of the church.

Following the account of Pentecost, Acts offers a quick summary of various characteristics of the early church. The church devoted itself to the Apostles’ teaching, was earnest about building fellowship, regularly celebrated the Lord’s Supper, and constantly offered prayers to God. These things were fundamental to the life of the early New Testament church.

The church’s desire for fellowship was particularly striking. Those who made up the early church cared for one another deeply. They looked out for one another. They saw to one another’s needs, sometimes to the point of sacrifice.  Their fellowship contributed to the growth of the church. Life in the early church was not so much a “God and me” thing as a “God and we” thing.
